Hiring people with disability has solved a critical staffing issue for WA Show Bags.
Faced with the challenge of managing staffing with only a six-to-eight-week production peak before the Perth Royal Show, Norm Sims contacted disability services organisation, Activ, to see if they could help.
That was five years ago, and Norm hasn’t looked back.
Each year supported employees from Activ help pack thousands of goodies into showbags in the lead up to the Royal Perth Show. It is a big job, which peaks in August and September in the countdown to the event.
“Doing it ourselves we were running into problems with the number of staff we needed because our busy period is mainly for six to eight weeks a year. When we spoke to Activ they said they were able to do it which took the headache away from us,” Norm says.
“We have a very good relationship with them, and we appreciate the work they do for us.
“It’s a collaborative effort – We work out a program and discuss with them what can be achieved, and we tailor it to suit their needs.”
“Activ know the capabilities of their people and put them in positions where they can do the jobs required.”
